Now through May 1, the fee to enter the 27th Annual Upper Pine Creek Trout Tournament on May 20-21 is $20 per adult and $15 for youth under 16. After May 1, the entry fee per adult will increase to $25; the fee for youth under 16 will remain the same. Up to $10,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded.
To register for the tournament, visit www.pagrandcanyonsnowmobileclub.com and download a registration form. Registration forms can also be found at many businesses in the area.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, registration forms will available at the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon Snowmobile Clubhouse on the south side of Route 6, halfway between Galeton and Wellsboro, near the former Coach Stop Inn. This is for those who want to register in advance and pick up bags, badges and maps. The next time the clubhouse will be open for registration is tournament weekend from May 19-21.
Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon Snowmobile Club, the tournament will be along a 13-mile stretch of Pine Creek between the Mill Street Bridge in Galeton Borough and the Ansonia Bridge in Shippen Township. The club stocks tagged fish in that section of Pine Creek. Each fish is randomly assigned a number.
The top prize is $1,000 in cash. The minimum prize has been increased from $25 to $50. The $50 may be cash, merchandise or a combination of both. The angler brings the tagged fish in “live condition” to the check-in station and then draw a Ping-Pong ball. The number on the ball identifies what the prize is, not the number on the fish.
Money raised through the tournament is used to help cover the club’s operating costs and also to provide a scholarship for a selected graduating senior from each high school in Galeton, Wellsboro, Mansfield and Cowanesque Valley. Money is also donated to local charities, such as the food banks at Wellsboro, Galeton and Osceola and to help families with special needs.
